High Profile Prep Games Abound Across The Gulf Coast This Weekend

There is no shortage of big time high school football matchups this weekend across southern Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, as region rivals get set to clash and jockey for playoff position in what appears to be the Friday Night Lights version of Showdown Saturday.

The best game I believe will take place in Mobile, as the undefeated and defending state champion Daphne Trojans make their way back across the Eastern Shore and visit the undefeated McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets, who like Daphne enter the contest at 8-0.  Daphne, loaded with Division I college prospects, has to be considered the favorite, but look for the Yellow Jackets to give them their strongest challenge this season.

It's been cut-throat this year over on the Mississippi Coast.  No team has been unable to go through the season without any blemishes on their record.  Tonight's menu of games featurs a rare #1 vs #2 matchup with the #1 ranked 7-1 D'Iberville Warriors hosting the #2 ranked 6-2 Gulfport Admirals.  As an added treat, this game also features two Mississippi coaching legends going against each other in D'Iberville's Buddy Singleton and Gulfport's Mike Justice.

Saturday night at Tad Gormely Stadium New Orleans Catholic Conference rivals Jesuit and Brother Martin will square off.  7-0 Jesuit is ranked #5 in The Times Picayune's statewide poll while 6-1 Brother Martin comes in at #10.  This game will feature a couple of college prospects in Nebraska committ LB Deion Jones of Jesuit while Brother Martin Defensive End Julien Obioha has committed to new SEC member Texas A&M.

Prime time matchups are taking place in Cajun Country as well.  Saint Thomas Moore of Lafayette, the #1 ranked 4A team by The Times Picayune, visits #5 Breaux Bridge.  And in 5A action, #3 ranked Carencro (7-0) visits defending state champion #8 Acadiana (5-2).
